Been meaning to do this. There's just so many photos. Nobody does death like the Sicilians, from what I have seen so far.
Created in 2017 when I left for grad school in Amsterdam, Amsterbloggen was created in an effort to keep updated my friends who use various modes of digital communication. Some use social media, but not all; some use only email, etc.

12 April Checking In
Been sick since I got back from Chicago Tuesday morning. Today I woke up with some energy and am catching up on stuff.
Couple of thoughts: (i) one sneeze on a plane and the whole world is infected; (ii) if I die in my bed no one will know until the smell hits the hallways. I aim to construct some kind of thing where at least someone that knows me can take over the burden of my corpse and emails and stuff should this place finally prevail over my shitty health.
Watched two good films on the plane.

14 March. Checking In.
Every now and again I check in on America.
What a big fat idiot.
I could conitnue searching for news, a general feel, but I have a thesis proposal to amend. It's due next week. Have to tighten up the methods section. There are tools available, including caffeine, which streamlines my thoughts and somehow keeps me trained on the computer for longer than I would be if I were undercaffeinated. Send dexidrene please. Never mind that. If I have to get loaded to do it, then it doesnt need to be done.
I'm headed to Chicago next month for a few days to attend a conference It is right on target for my thesis topic, but I have no idea yet how I will use the visit in my research, or even if I will. My interest in the event is to leave theory for a minute and dive into real life - see what the people about whom I have been reading, writing and upon whose actions I have formed the core of my research questions are doing. A smart thing to do would be to contact the event directors and relay my desire to interview organizers. This requires a bit of deep thinking (like, today) and commitment on my part but is also risky as then the heart of my research will depend on another - will they show up, for example. On the other hand, people love to talk about themselves (haha...BLOG), so how hard can it be to nail down maybe ten interviews? Anybody with interview-based field research experience here? Contact me.
So, thinking out loud here I think I should now get back to work and see how I can set up ten interviews while I am in Chicago. And drafting an interview guide. But before that, going through my (are you bored yet? my god you should have fell asleep ages ago) research questions to nail down EXACTLY what I hope the interviews will highlight, provide, support, deny.
And here I have only been looking forward to stocking up on Benadryl. It isn't sold here.
I have been out of the U.S. for seven months now. Wonder what it will be like to be back for a spell?

Some songs I am really digging, or continue to dig.
Modern Girl
The Quotidian Beasts

Koln (or, Cologne). 21 Dec
It's in Germany.
On the 30 minute train ride I used the map of the Christmas markets provided by the city to load up the navigator. They were five - each about a 20-30 minute walk apart. I arrived at 11am. My train back to D'Dorf left at 5:30 pm. I could do this.
Not that I am in a hurry. There is always another train. It just cost a bit more to change a booking. If there is a reason to stay longer I will. In this case, however, I saw all I wanted to see. The best market (most original, booths that were different than the ones before) was of course was the very last one.
I liked Koln from the start. Some funky buildings. Unexpected splashes of color. I like any place that hands out paint rollers to one so inclined and says, do your thing.
Do your thing, Kolners.

I veered into a fancy house things place. This lamp intrigued me. I snapped a pic right before seeing the BIG sign saying no photos.
I feel like I got away with something BIG.
Just a play yard at a school but I liked it.
McDonalds, that's a pretty ballsy art choice there.
A window display dedicated to the Addams family. I like the family photos touch.
